A Way Out of the Pandemic

As we head into this fall, almost every patient I see is concerned about the health of his or her immune system.

Between hurricanes and smoke from the wildfires, not enough exercise and too much sugar, and feeling run down from the constant stress of this “new normal”, it’s time to take a look at how we got here and make a plan to optimize your health now!

Because over the last 50 years, the rates of chronic diseases have been rising in America and around the world. Conditions, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and obesity have resulted in an increased incidence of diabetes, heart disease and strokes, chronic kidney and lung disease.

60% of American adults have one of these chronic diseases and 40% have two or more, according to our own CDC. Let that reality sink in.

When these conditions occur along with obesity (as they so often do), it’s called Metabolic Syndrome and a whopping 30% of Americans (and almost one-quarter of the world’s population) have this lethal combination. (1)

Metabolic Syndrome creates a state of chronic inflammation - which impairs our immune response and predisposes to the worst outcomes of COVID-19.

Each of these conditions occurs in a state of chronic inflammation, which impairs the ability of our immune system to respond properly to exposure to a range of infections, including COVID-19. (2)  It is interesting to see how the chronic disease burden evolves into metabolic syndrome and how together, set the stage for a viral pandemic.

In a brilliant article entitled “A Pandemic Within A Pandemic”, my esteemed mentor, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, connects the dots between the global epidemic of metabolic syndrome, chronic inflammation and an increased risk of COVID-19. This article is a must-read for anyone who is deeply interested in the science behind this topic. (3)
